I'm Dr Christian Gray, a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, immunologist, medical education researcher and founder of Gray MedPrep.For more than 13 years I've taught medical students, and for the past seven years I've led a university-based USMLE Step 1 preparation program supporting more than 600 North American medical students.
My academic research includes USMLE Step 1 preparation, assessment and student learning, and I've published and contributed to academic work on medical licensing examination preparation.But the most important thing I bring to a coaching session is experience seeing how hundreds of students prepare for Step 1 - what works, what doesn't, and why capable students can work incredibly hard without seeing that effort reflected in their assessment performance.

60 minutes · One-to-one online · USD $150Before we meet, I'll review the information you provide about your recent NBME CBSE results, question bank progress, examination timeline and current concerns.During the session, we'll work through your preparation and selected Step 1-style questions to identify where performance is being lost.Depending on your needs, we may examine:

  • Answer changing and overthinking

Gray MedPrep is primarily focused on USMLE Step 1 and NBME CBSE preparation.I also work selectively with students preparing for other knowledge-based medical licensing examinations, including the UKMLA, AMC MCQ and MCCQE-style examinations, where my approach is appropriate to the student's needs.For students preparing for the UKMLA, I bring almost six years of experience at a UK medical school, where I was Lecturer in Infection & Immunity and Immunology Lead. My work also included academic tutoring and supporting students with diverse learning needs.I am also co-author of two Cambridge University Press chapters specifically on preparing for and taking the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test (AKT).

What is Step 1 performance coaching?
Step 1 performance coaching focuses on how your knowledge is translated into decisions under examination conditions. That can include question interpretation, retrieval, clinical reasoning, timing, answer changing, review strategy, study structure and confidence. Content gaps still matter, but the starting assumption is not that every missed question requires more content study.Is this the same as traditional Step 1 tutoring?
Not exactly. I can teach and clarify medical content when that is the problem, but Gray MedPrep begins by identifying why your current preparation is not producing the performance you expect. For some students that is a knowledge problem. For others it is retrieval, interpretation, decision-making, timing or ineffective review.What happens in the Performance Diagnostic?
Before the session, I review the information you provide about your examination timeline, recent assessment performance, practice-question progress and main concerns. During the 60-minute session, we examine your preparation and question approach to identify where performance is being lost. You then receive a personalised action plan and written coaching summary.Do I need ongoing tutoring?
No. For some students, the initial Performance Diagnostic may be all they need. If targeted follow-up coaching would be useful, we can discuss this after the session. There is no requirement to buy a package or commit to ongoing tutoring.How much does it cost?
The 60-minute Performance Diagnostic is USD $150. Targeted 30-minute Follow-Up Coaching for existing Gray MedPrep students is USD $75. Follow-up sessions are requested through the Gray MedPrep enquiry form.Can you guarantee that my NBME score will improve or that I will pass Step 1?
No. No tutor or coaching service can responsibly guarantee an examination outcome. Gray MedPrep provides educational tutoring and performance coaching designed to help identify performance barriers and improve preparation, but examination results depend on many factors.Can you help if I have previously failed or deferred Step 1?
Yes. A previous unsuccessful attempt or deferral can be an appropriate reason to seek a diagnostic review, particularly if you want to understand what needs to change rather than repeating the same preparation strategy.Can you help neurodivergent students?
Yes. I have extensive experience supporting students with diverse learning needs, including neurodivergent learners. You do not need to disclose a diagnosis. If there is anything about how you learn, process information or work under examination conditions that would help me tailor the session, you can tell me when booking or during the consultation.Are you a practising clinician?
No. My professional background is in immunology, medical education and student learning rather than clinical practice. I have spent more than 13 years teaching medical students and seven years leading a university-based USMLE Step 1 preparation program. Gray MedPrep focuses specifically on educational preparation and examination performance.Do you work with students outside the United States?
Yes. Sessions are online, and students can participate from anywhere, subject to available appointment times.Do you work with University of Queensland students?

What Happens During a Step 1 Performance Diagnostic?

Every Performance Diagnostic is a one-to-one online session tailored to your current stage of Step 1 preparation.Before We Meet
When you book, you'll provide a brief snapshot of your examination timeline, recent NBME or CBSE results, question bank progress and the main problem you want help with. I review this before the session so we can use our time efficiently.During the Session
We start by clarifying what is happening in your preparation. Depending on your needs, we may examine recent assessment patterns, how you approach Step 1-style questions, how you form and test hypotheses, where you lose time, why you change answers, how you review practice questions, or whether your current study structure is targeting the right problem. This is not a generic lecture. The purpose is to diagnose the performance problem and work on the parts of your preparation most likely to benefit from change.After the Session
You'll receive a written coaching summary and personalised action plan outlining the priorities we identified and what to do next.
Many students may only need the diagnostic. If a targeted follow-up would add value, we'll discuss that at the end of the session. There is no requirement to purchase a package.

They struggle because high-stakes examinations require them to identify what matters, retrieve the right knowledge, make a decision under time pressure and then learn efficiently from the result.The Gray Method™ organises that process into three stages.1. Before building a long differential diagnosis, identify what the question is actually testing. What is the broad category? What mechanism or localisation is most likely? Which clue has the greatest power to separate the correct answer from the distractors?
Triage is about reducing noise before investing cognitive effort.2. Decide
Once you have a working hypothesis, test it against the important findings and the answer choices. Ask which diagnosis, mechanism or next step best explains the information that matters.
The purpose is not to create more possibilities. It is to remove possibilities and recognise when you have enough evidence to commit.

About Dr Christian Gray

I'm Dr Christian Gray, a Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, immunologist, medical education researcher and founder of Gray MedPrep.For more than 13 years, I've taught medical students and designed learning programs supporting students preparing for high-stakes medical examinations.For the past seven years, I've led a university-based USMLE Step 1 preparation program supporting North American medical students. During that time, I've worked with more than 600 students preparing for Step 1 and developed a deep understanding of the challenges students face when their performance plateaus despite sustained effort.My academic work includes research into medical education, assessment, student learning and USMLE Step 1 preparation. My recent research published in Medical Science Educator examined patterns of practice-question engagement and examination performance in students preparing for USMLE Step 1.
